Start your journey by visiting the famous 18th-century Prophet Elias Monastery, which is built on the highest point of the island, at 567 meters above sea level. Today, the monastery has its own museum, where you can browse through a collection of rare ecclesiastical artifacts, books, and Byzantine icons and sculptures. Continue onwards to Megalochori, one of the most picturesque villages on the island. It has a history of old traditional houses, pirate hideaways, and Vinsanto wines. The village is very charming and was almost abandoned after a major earthquake.
Continue onwards to the Akrotiri Excavations, once the center of a brilliant civilization that reached its heyday between 1550-1500 BC. Around 200 families lived here and the site is preserved albeit buried under the volcano's lava. Explore the site before heading to the Red Beach to explore the colorful mountain formations and/or visit Akrotiri Bay for coffee or lunch with Greek traditional mezedes and ouzo (not included in the price). Perivolos, with its black sandy beach, comes next. Spend your time here swimming, exploring the area, and tasting freshly cooked fish at the local taverns.
